| Short Profile | Originally qualifying as a forester and practising forest management for 10 years, he made an inspired transition and now has over 25 years applying spatial technologies in forestry and natural resources environments. He worked for a multi-national pulp and paper company for over 30 years, and was responsible for the GIS Section. He developed and expanded the role of GIS and Remote Sensing to become a core management system within the company, with ongoing monitoring of forest stand status, health, forest certification and related sustainability aspects. His enterprise-level GIS system, with replicated databases, enabled distributed updating processes to be done. He also introduced remote sensing techniques such as Lidar and Radar. After leaving corporate employment, he has provided his expertise in a consulting role to forestry companies and forest management consulting firms involved in projects in Angola, Liberia, Costa Rica, Brazil, Tanzania and Kenya amongst other places. These projects have included forest status assessments, due diligence exercises, site-species matching and small-scale farm forestry assessments. He has experience in applying these technologies in agriculture, town planning and water catchment management/flood risk assessments. |
